A group of young scooter fans have packed supermarket bags, taken part in a ten-mile fancy dress walk and stayed awake for 16 hours to raise funds to get them to a festival.
The youngsters all attend Newton Aycliffe Youth Centre and applied to Great Aycliffe and Middridge Partnership for funding to put on a series of skate park events in the town’s park last year.
The events were a huge success and proved extremely popular, with more and more competitors taking part each time a competition was held. Someone suggested a trip to the popular Scootfest, held each year at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire, but with costs of over £1,600 for the youngsters to attend they had to put their heads together to come up with some fundraising ideas.
Laura Langdale, One Point youth worker with Durham County Council, said: “The response to the skating events from young people in the town has been brilliant. Watching the group develop and bond has been an amazing experience.
“The weekend was an unbelievable experience and such a great achievement to end a brilliant project.
“They were fantastic to work with and have already started to discuss plans to go again next year.”
Billy Wade, Aaran Taylor, Jacob Kennedy, Harry Duggan, Matthew Brown, Adam McCabe, Paul Gray, Drea Latue, Jack Strain and Bradley Claughton took part in the project.
