Celebrations are in the air at Sugar Hill Primary School to mark their recent achievement of gaining ‘Young Carers’ Accreditation’. Young Carers are special people who take on extra responsibilities in their young lives and this year staff and pupils have been working to gain Accreditation for the ‘Young Carers’ Charter’, led by Mrs Kathy Legge (SENCo/Intervention Manager).
Staff at Sugar Hill Primary are aware that, for some Young Carers, dealing with school life can be much harder. Identifying these caring pupils can result in additional help, advice and support being offered, with a few small changes making a big difference for Young Carers and their families.
Mrs Lynda Cumming (Headteacher) has demonstrated a strong commitment to building a happy, caring and secure environment for Young Carers and their families, and she has allowed the time and resources to provide the support that is required. Staff at Sugar Hill Primary have also shown real empathy with Young Carers and share a desire to provide the right support for these pupils. Mrs Legge acknowledges Accreditation is only the beginning of supporting Young Carers at Sugar Hill and it is recognised that only with continued support will the lives of those pupils who care for someone at home be improved.
Mrs Legge would also like to thank Glenys Newby from Bridge Young Carers for all her support with the ‘Young Carers’ Charter’. “We are so grateful to Glenys for her support and so proud to have our work recognised as worthy of the pledges in the ‘Young Carers’ Charter”, said Mrs Legge.
Emma Wilson, a pupil from Year 4 was chosen by Mrs Legge to receive the ‘Young Carers’ Charter’ on behalf of the school at a special presentation by local author, Adam Bushnell.
Adam warmly congratulated Emma on her appointment as chairperson to the new ‘Young Carers’ Action Group’ which will be active in the school from September 2013.
