Twenty two Year 9 students have become published authors after taking part in a national schools’ writing initiative. The aspiring young writers from Woodham Academy were chosen by publicist Young Writers UK to have their work published in the book ‘Spine Chillers, Twilight Terrors’ which is now available to buy from youngwriters.co.uk and will be distributed to schools and libraries across the UK and Ireland . The students were given the brief to produce a piece of creative writing work, no more than 100 words long using the topic ‘spine chiller’. The following piece by Emily French gives you a flavour of the work: “Deciding her fate, Elaine turned her head. That movement was a death sentence. Like sanding your own chopping block. A shadowed man stood on Elaine’s lawn, drenched in the darkness, his only movement the slender fingers sliding along the iced metal of his flute. Rigid and motionless, like a deer in the headlights, except he had the ability to rip a car apart. Flapping in the breeze, his dark cloak fastened firmly at his pale throat. Emotionless, the black pits of his eyes were fixated on his mute instrument until he glanced up. A scream rang in the night”.
