The mental health charity, Hub of Wishes based in Silverdale House, marked World Mental Health Day with a day of calming activities i.e. “colour me calm” adult colouring, holistic therapies in our treatment room and a film show in the afternoon. Sandwiches and tea/coffee was available, also snacks from our Tuck Shop. It was a relaxing, reflective day as we remembered highlights of 2018. These included our day trips to Windermere, Blackpool, Redcar; our walking days – especially the Treasure Hunt Walk in Richmond; special Easter party, the members’ wedding party we held in the centre and of course the accredited courses attended by our members. The focus was very much on wellbeing – how to achieve and maintain healthy lifestyles. Many anxieties seem less so after a cup of tea and a chat to someone friendly who is willing to listen. Self esteem is boosted by being included, learning new skills, sharing knowledge and experiences.
Other activities at Hub of Wishes are singing group, art/crafts, lunch club and bingo, health walks (warmer months) and exercise sessions. We have accredited courses working with Bishop Auckland College and various workshops within the centre.
If you have a skill or knowledge you could pass on to our members, why not consider becoming a volunteer at Hub of Wishes? Volunteering can be very enriching and rewarding. Some of our past volunteers have gained social work or counselling degrees/ qualifications and now work in the mental health sector or other social capacity. Whilst volunteering you will gain a sense of achievement for yourself and also have a positive impact on the lives of others.
Hub of Wishes is open 10.00am – 4.00pm Monday to Friday and a new evening service operates Wednesday evenings from 6-9pm. We are now on YouTube!
