Stephenson Way celebrated World Book Day last week with a series of activities to mark the occasion.
Children were invited to attend school dressed as their favourite literary character. This transformed school into a fantasy world where Harry Potter could find Wally, Horrid Henry could terrorise a succession of fairytale princesses and even a caveman teaching a class! There were some terrific costumes that had a great deal of thought and effort put into them, with the best costumes in each class awarded a prize during a special literacy themed assembly.
In the afternoon, the children formed teams to compete in a book quiz. The questions tested the children’s knowledge on some famous works in children’s literature and the quiz generated a competitive, yet fun, atmosphere in the classroom.
World Book Day is an important event, which brings public attention to something which occurs at Stephenson Way all year round; promoting reading for pleasure. The school actively encourages children to read regularly, with an incentive scheme which allows for children to earn the right to buy books they want to read for the school through regular home reading.
