Woodham Academy students began the school’s annual Apprenticeship Awareness Challenge this week. A range of local employers, including Lucite, 3M, PCP, Hydram, Carnell, SW Durham Training Ltd and the Fire and Rescue Service, all presented apprenticeship opportunities to each Y9 class. Each class then went out to one of the companies, visiting the site and asking questions of staff. Students are now busy preparing a presentation about apprenticeship opportunities in that company. They will give their presentation to parents, company representatives and governors at the Apprenticeship Awareness Final next month.
The Apprenticeship Awareness Challenge is part of Woodham Academy’s extensive careers education programme. The aim is to allow all students to see the opportunities available to them so that they can make informed choices when they leave school.
Careers co-ordinator, Dave Walker, says, “we are very grateful to all of the companies who are taking part in this year’s Apprenticeship Awareness Challenge and to those who provide work experience placements for our engineering students. It is no surprise that many of our students are successful in obtaining apprenticeships when they leave us.”
