On Friday 21st February, 29 students, from Woodham’s Rugby Academy, travelled to Kingston Park to watch the England U20’s vs Scotland U20’s Six Nations game. On arrival to the stadium a number of the students were lucky enough to be asked to take to the pitch to hold the England flag behind the teams whilst the national anthems were played, in front of a close to 10,000-person crowd.
The students invited on the trip have regularly attended Woodham’s weekly Rugby Academy sessions and represented the school in several rugby fixtures throughout the school year. They are part of a growing number of students playing rugby at Woodham Academy and students arriving in Year 7 are now joining with some great enthusiasm for the sport, with the Year 7 team remaining unbeaten so far this school year.
The England U20’s team couldn’t have put on a better experience for the students as they ran out convincing winners 57-13 vs Scotland U20’s. The students were amazed by the speed of the game, the accuracy of skills and the power demonstrated in tackles and scrums.
Mr Patterson said “I am really pleased with the number of students who are showing an interest in rugby at Woodham. The sport shares similar values with those we aim to instil in our students such as respect and teamwork. The students on the trip behaved impeccably and were a credit to the school.”
