The new school year at Woodham Academy has seen the beginning of the school’s first ever session of ‘Harry Potter Club’. The club was the brainchild of Year 8 student Kyle Mansfield, who approached Head teacher Christine Forsyth with the idea last term. Mrs Forsyth was extremely impressed with Kyle’s ideas for the club which included a fully costed list of equipment that they required. The first session saw the students making their own wands, which they are excited to put to use in coming weeks. They practised their wand work whilst simultaneously quizzing each other with Harry Potter related trivia. Miss Cheverall, an English Teacher and facilitator of the club said, “What these students don’t know about Harry Potter – isn’t worth knowing”.
In the coming weeks students will be sorted into Hogwarts Houses, host a Halloween Feast, attend a potions class and are hoping to organise some Harry Potter related trips for later in the year.
Miss Thomas, Reading Co-ordinator at Woodham (and fellow Potterhead) was astounded at the turnout. “I expected a handful of students, but there were over twenty. At Woodham we try to instil a culture of reading from the moment students start in year 7. In the past five years we have invested a substantial amount of money in our Reading Rooms and are passionate about ensuring students pick up a book in a world of rapidly advancing technology. I think Harry Potter club is testament to the success of this ethos. They are some of our most popular books and are really standing the test of time”.
The Harry Potter Club showcased their spellcasting skills at Woodham Academy’s Year 6 Open Evening on Thursday 20th September.
