Woodham Academy held an open day for representatives from schools and Local Authorities to showcase highly effective teaching. For the last five years, the Academy has been working with the Australian Consultancy, Group 8 Education, to apply the latest research into how children learn. Whether in Victoria or County Durham, the same conditions seem to lead to students doing well. These include high levels of respect for other people, feeling safe in school, teachers who listen to their students and teachers who know their subjects well. As a result of this high quality teaching, Woodham has seen year-on-year improvements in student engagement, behaviour and achievement, leading to the school’s best-ever, examination results in 2012.
Headteacher, Christine Forsyth, says “The collaboration with Group 8 Education in Australia has given our teachers an interesting opportunity to reflect on their own professional development. Woodham’s success is due to the excellent teaching that takes place on a day-to-day basis.”
Woodham Academy is currently working with a number of schools in the UK, USA and Australia who are also interested in developing outstanding teaching.
