Back in 2008, Miss Wass of Woodham Academy piloted a cross-curricular visit to Berlin which was a huge success and has since gone on to become an established visit for students. This visit is always oversubscribed because of its educational value as well as being extremely enjoyable.
The Academy is delighted to be able to offer students the exciting opportunity to visit the capital city of Germany again during the Festive Season. The visit will provide students with the chance to improve their knowledge of German language and culture, as well as visiting sites that are closely linked to the KS4 History syllabus.
We will include a visit to the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, The Berlin Wall and Checkpoint Charlie as well as the Brandenburg Gate. On a lighter note students will also visit the 365m high TV Tower with revolving restaurant, Berlin Zoo and Aquarium (one of the largest in the world) and much more.
New for this year is a visit to the Reichstag and Dome. ‘This is an excellent cross curricular opportunity to be able to bring to life what is written and spoken about in history textbooks and the classrooms of Newton Aycliffe!’ said Mrs King, Head of History at Woodham Academy.
As we will be visiting Berlin around Christmastime, we will be fortunate enough to participate in many of the traditional celebrations and activities that are on offer. These include the world-famous Weihnachtsmarkt (Christmas Market) which is a cultural must-see as well as providing a valuable Christmas shopping oppor-tunity! You will catch Miss Wass and other daring students enjoying some winter fun on the city-centre snow slide from Sunday 16th December to Friday 21st.
