Woodham Academy Year 8 students have been learning about World War One, examining the causes and consequences of this devastating war and they also spent a lesson considering why we remember such events. They were able to link this to modern day conflicts and terrorist attacks realising the relevance that History still plays in our lives today. Students were given the opportunity to design their own trenches, showing how difficult it was for troops to attack an enemy trench and carrying out additional independent research to make their designed trenches as realistic as possible.
The completed homework projects truly show how hard the students have worked as they were of very good quality. The finished products indicated an extraordinary amount of effort and engagement in the subject matter. The trenches had a very professional finish showing element such as the sandbags, duckboards, dugouts, barbed wire and the horror of no-mans land. Other students chose to write a detailed diary entry imagining they were experiencing the trenches. These diary entries were based in historical research showing an excellent understanding of the conditions the soldiers had to endure.
