A group of our year 7 and 8 girls have attended a ‘Women in Engineering’ event at New College Durham. Our students took part in a range of activities to find out about roles women work within and completed engineering challenges and puzzles.
One of our team’s won the ‘chain’ challenge where students had to create a paper chain out of recycled materials. Our winning team managed to create a chain almost 6 metres in length. Our students then got to meet several engineering companies about what kind of career opportunities and training they offer for school leavers regarding careers for women in engineering and meet people who are in those roles currently.
Students were also given a tour of the new engineering department that has been developed at New College Durham to allow some of the big companies of the northeast to train their apprentices ready to work in future roles.
