The County Durham Wellbeing for Life service has been working in the local community to promote cancer screening and encourage people to attend their screening appointments. There are three types of cancer screening available in the UK, cervical, breast and bowel. It is offered to the people who are most likely to benefit from it, but figures of people attending their appointment has fallen. Wellbeing for Life have been working in partnership with local GP surgeries and community venues to promote the screening programmes and encourage people to take part.
Vicki Moffat, Wellbeing Coordinator said “People are putting their lives at risk by not attending their screening appointment so I’m very happy with the response we’ve had to this campaign. Staff and volunteers were trained in raising awareness of the importance of cancer screening and have spoken to 1561 people across the county. 822 have also signed pledge cards to take part in the next screening opportunity. We had a prize draw to encourage people to stop and find out more about this vital information and the luxury hamper was won by Sharon Crooks from Craghead, Stanley.” Cancer screening saves thousands of lives every year in the UK. Screening aims to find cancers early and very early cancers are usually easier to treat, may need less treatment, and are more likely to be cured. It is so important to go for your screening whenever you are invited. Please contact Vicki Moffat, Wellbeing for Life Coordinator (East Durham Hub) on 0191 5274150
