“The Champions” is a local project aimed at supporting people hit by benefit cuts under the Government’s Welfare Reform agenda, launched in March in Newton Aycliffe.
The project has recruited a small army of local volunteers who will provide advice and guidance to people in their own neighbourhoods to anyone who has been affected by the Welfare Reforms.
Six Champions are now available in local communities to provide support. Your local Welfare Champions are: David Sutton-Lloyd, Daniel Robertson, Peter Burgess, Julie Devon, Elaine Robson and Ken Robson.
Providing initial guidance, the volunteers will also signpost individuals to supportive services such as advice agencies, local housing providers and welfare rights teams. In addition to general queries from their community.
Welfare Champion Pete said: “We came together to try and be a voice for those who may be vulnerable to changes in benefit. A group of people with a social conscience working to reduce dis-crimination and prejudice for people who need help with their welfare. We don’t have all the answers, we may not be the solution; but – we are working to make a small difference and highlight the need to be informed and the vulnerable to have a chance at welfare support.”
