Sedgefield Water Polo Club travelled to Maltby Leisure Centre, Rotherham on Sunday 21st July for our U16’s to play their away league fixture against local rivals, Rotherham Metro.
The game got off to a flying start with a goal from Thomas just 18 seconds after the starting whistle. This was followed by a goal from Tyler within a minute, and a second from Thomas just 20 seconds afterwards. The opposition then started to fight back and scored a goal which was then followed by two exclusions in close succession. Gregor, Finley and Kyle then added their names to the score sheet, followed by a third goal from Thomas, and second goals from Kyle and Finley. This meant that the score at the end of the first quarter was 1-8 to Sedgefield.
The second quarter started with Rotherham showing they were going to fight back; but they fought too hard and had a player excluded – before they retaliated and scored a goal. This was followed by Thomas scoring just 20 seconds later only for Rotherham to attack and score again. The goals for Sedgefield kept on coming with Vihra making the score sheet just before half time, where the score was an impressive 6-12.
After a half time team talk by coach Ben, Sedgefield’s youngsters were determined to continue playing the game to the best of their ability as they wanted a good goal difference which would help on the league table. Goalie Aston took a risk with a long shot and scored – something which rarely happens in water polo – and the balcony erupted into cheers and applause. This was followed by a penalty from Iesha. The team focused on their defence and didn’t allow Rotherham to score a goal in the entire quarter, despite Sedgefield maintaining their lead and scoring another 8 goals during the quarter.
The final quarter started with Sedgefield having a 6-20 lead. Knowing the win was confirmed, the team relied upon their fitness and strength, again ensuring that not a single goal was scored by the opposition. A hat trick from Gregor, two goals from Harry and one from Owen gave the team their comfortable 6-26 win. A special mention also to Bram who, despite being a goalkeeper, played outfield for the duration of the match.
