Students at Greenfield Community College became ‘The Walking Red’ and organised a wide range of different activities to raise well over £1,000 for Comic Relief on Friday 24th March. The day was designated as a ‘non-uniform’ day and many students adopted the colour theme, with an array of red t-shirts, red hoodies and red socks.
At break-time, school halls at both Sunnydale Campus and Aycliffe Site were transformed into markets, with a range of items for sale, from homemade cakes to Mother’s Day and Easter cards. A number of competitions were also organised, including a crossbar challenge, guess the name of the teddy and a Comic Relief song sweepstake! At the Sunnydale Campus, students took part in karaoke at break and lunchtime to add an element of entertainment, and even managed to sneak in a plug for the upcoming school show, ‘We Will Rock You’. At the Aycliffe Site there was a charity football match at lunch time and a number of students were unusually quiet as they helped raise money with a sponsored silence.
All of the preparation was led by the students through the school’s Time4Success programme which encourages innovation and participation in mixed age tutor groups. A special mention must go to Sunlight form, based at the Sunnydale Campus, who organised the sale of Red Noses and raised £140 of the final total. All in all, everyone agreed that it was a fabulous day, and plans are already in place for a further fundraiser in June – watch this space!
