Members of the public are being invited to play a key role in making recommendations on how much councillors should be paid in allowances.

Durham County Council is seeking people to sit on its Independent Remuneration Panel.

The panel, which includes up to seven independent members, is responsible for making recommendations to full council on:

• The basic allowance paid to all 126 members of the council

• Special responsibility allowances for the Leader, Deputy Leader, Cabinet members and other members with additional responsibilities

• Travel subsistence allowances

Members of the panel serve for five years and are required to attend two or three meetings in Durham City each year.

Applicants should be completely independent of the council, well qualified to discharge the functions of the panel and representative of County Durham’s diverse communities.

Successful candidates will receive an induction and other appropriate training and will be able to claim reasonable travel expenses.

The closing date for applications is Friday, 23 August 2019.
