Members of Aycliffe and District Bus Preservation Society were pleased to see the Society’s 1964 Darlington Corporation Transport double decker not only recently re-paneled and repainted by Gardiners of Spennymoor, but now displaying a period 1960’s advert for the Art Shop in Bondgate, Darlington previously located in Duke Street.
Ian Hughes, now the present owner of the Art Shop, was delighted to be part of this nostalgic return to yesteryear as this was the same Art Shop bus advert in the 1960’s. There are only a handful of shops in Darlington which have existed for 60 years. Thanks to the approach by the Society and decal work by Classical Signs of Aycliffe Business Park, the bus is now a delight to see on the road.
The Society’s next project is the re-paneling and repainting of the Newtonian which will be carried out in October by Gardiners and this is another link both with the past and with the Newton News which was originally called the Newtonian when the late Syd Howarth took over the free newspaper for Newton Aycliffe.
