Durham Wildcats are pleased to announce the signing of American-Italian Sam Martin. The 6’3 guard joins the Wildcats after a stint with Plymouth Raiders last season and is expected to be a valuable addition to the team’s backcourt.
Martin will be hopeful to build on the Wildcat’s most successful season last year with his shooting presence and strong defence on the perimeter. The Rhode Island native played in the Ivy League with Yale University (NCAA Division I), averaging 4.6 points per game whilst netting 34 three pointers in his senior season.
Wildcats Chairman Quentin Sloper believes Martin will be a perfect fit for the club, “We are delighted to have Sam on board. Our club model is based around combining education with elite sport, and Sam, who is an undergraduate from Yale University, is a superb example of the model coming to fruition.” Martin will be undertaking a Master’s degree in Defence, Development and Diplomacy from Durham University’s School of Government and International Affairs.
Sloper anticipates Martin’s previous experience in the BBL will be very beneficial for this year’s campaign. “Having been at Plymouth last season, he has experienced basketball in the UK and more importantly, he knows how to make an impact in the BBL.”
Martin is the fourth overseas recruit for the Wildcats, following the arrivals of American big men John Puk (University of Albany) and Tom Knight (Notre Dame), as well as point guard Chris Jones (Prairie View A&M).
The Wildcats will complete their pre-season schedule on Tuesday 16th September, when they will welcome Division 1 outfit and neighbours, Team Northumbria to Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre for a 7.30pm tip-off. Tickets are on sale now at www.godurhamwildcats.com
