In 2019 the Rotary Newton Aycliffe members, to commemorate the life of their much loved and respected former President and also District Governor, Syd Howarth, MBE, planted an Acer Griseum tree in his memory, close to the Rotary sign at the Blue Bridge.
Earlier this year an individual decided it would be a good idea to take a saw to it and cut it down.
Our members were extremely disappointed and upset at this unwarranted action and, at the members expense, have now replaced the tree which, once again, stands on the original site.
The tree is an Acer Griseum Paperbark Maple, it is a spreading deciduous tree with attractive peeling Chestnut Brown Paperbark and beautiful red leaves in the autumn.
The members hope this tree will develop on the site, giving pleasure to all that see it, and allow fond memories of Syd, who worked tirelessly for the town and residents.
