Despite the awful weather the community came together in large numbers to mark Remembrance Sunday on 8th November at the War Memorial at St. Clare’s Church.
Our Town Band led the large parade of civilians, forces personnel and uniformed organisations congregating with residents in the natural auditorium our Town Centre roundabout affords.
As per tradition the short outdoor Service contained the last post, two minutes silence and reveille followed with wreath laying by Civic dignitaries including our MP and Mayor.
Our Town Band, conducted by Mike Priestley, accompanied the hymns and everyone present acknowledged their superb musicianship. Numerous comments showed how much we appreciate their presence on this occasion and how lucky we are to have such talented brass band players.
The high standard displayed by these musicians added so much to the splendour and emotion of this occasion.
The Service itself was conducted by Rev Elizabeth Bland a fairly recent newcomer to the Parish Church and her address was succinct, pertinent and heart-warming. She spoke of the extra poignancy of this year’s remembrance, the 70th Anniversary of the end of the 2nd World War. Elizabeth spoke of the importance of winning the peace and the need for everyone to have peace in their heart – “in the name of the Prince of Peace – our Lord!”
Young people were involved in the prayers and our Mayor Mary Dalton read the first lesson with the Reviewing Officer, Lt. Col. Moore MBE, reading St. Paul’s Letter to the Phillipians.
Remembrance Sunday in Aycliffe was emotional and respectful to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country. It also brought to mind the work of the British Legion, the Poppy Appeal and all who care for those who suffer as a result of war and bigotry.
