Aycliffe and Brancepeth band, one of the oldest organisations in Newton Aycliffe, are looking for a new rehearsal room.
Originally formed as Newton Aycliffe Town Band in 1960 the band was renamed the Aycliffe and Brancepeth band in 1994 when the Brancepeth Welfare band, itself with a history dating back the 1860’s was looking to amalgamate rather than disband altogether.
In 1990 the band began rehearsing in the grounds of Appletree building in a band room which was errected by members of the band under the permission and guidance of Mr Baz Porritt, then a part owner of Appletree building company and also playing member of the band.
With the kind permission of Appletreee and Baz and Doreen Porritt in particular, the band has enjoyed 28 years of sole use and settled music making in the building. With its junior section it has helped many young brass players from the town and district and as a senior band has competed in numerous national and local contests and enjoys an excellent reputation as a performing concert band.
The band supports local events such as the Remembrance day parades, Durham miners gala and countless Town and Village shows, fetes and concerts.
The band would like to thank the generosity shown over the years by Appletree and the Porritt family in particular.
Moving forward, the band would welcome any suggestions of how this self funding local band could hold their two rehearsals. At present they meet Wednesday 7.30 to 9.30pm and Sunday 6.00 to 8.00pm. Accessible Space close by to store a large library of music, music stands and instruments would be an important requirement.
The band is always looking for players young and older and anyone wishing to join this friendly band and thriving band should contact one of the numbers or Email below, instruments and training can be arranged.
