Now celebrating its 100th year, the Women’s Institute has 78 branches throughout the county and to mark their century of success, the Durham Federation has been presented with the Chairman’s Medal.
A member from each branch attended County Hall where they received their award from Cllr John Robinson, JP, Chairman of Durham County Council.
And to highlight the last 100 years of the WI in County Durham, the County Hall Records Office also put on display photographs and memorabilia from throughout this period.
Cllr Robinson, said: “My reason for this event is to bestow upon you, the Chairman’s Medal. I have done so to mark the centenary of your organisation while honouring all of the branches of the Durham WI for what they have achieved in their communities by celebrating friendship.
“I hope everyone has enjoyed the wonderful display, highlighting many extracts from the extensive archive held here by the County Records Office.”
Lyn Swift from Newton Aycliffe, Chairman of Durham County WI, is presented with the Chairman’s Medal from Cllr John Robinson, JP, Chairman of Durham County Council.
