Greenfield Arts invites you to the preview of our latest exhibition by Tom Lamb on Wednesday 10th January, 6pm to 8pm.

Tom Lamb started work as a miner at the age of fourteen, in 1942, at Craghead Colliery on Co. Durham. He worked for 27 years and often sketched his fellow miners underground. His sketchbooks have been the basis for many of his realistic paintings depicting the harsh working conditions with the constant fear of roof-falls, explosions, water inrushes and injury from machinery. Tom was a contemporary and friend of other mining artists, notably Norman Cornish, Tom McGuinness and Bill Hindmarsh.

Tom died in February 2016 and this retrospective exhibition represents his life’s work. Tom was also a superb landscape artist and many of his works will be for sale. The paintings represent a way of life and work long since passed. When he started work there were over 750,000 people involved in coal mining in the UK, now there are hardly any.

The book “Tom Lamb. The Biography of a Mining Artist” will also be on sale at £10. Proceeds to the Mining Institute.
