It’s been very busy since the last blog and a very positive one too, firstly thanks go to Nancy for her donation, June, Valerie and Marlene for their continued help with the upcoming fundraising events, the next one is at the Scout Centre, Bluebell Way, thank you Karen, yet again.
This morning I received an email from the British Hedgehog Preservation Society confirming that our prickly babies are starting to thrive in urban areas, hedgehog highways are one way we can help them, a small hole the size of a CD will help them immensely, also B&Q have on sale, slug killer that’s wildlife friendly. Pictures of this item are on my Facebook page, Prickly Haven Hedgehog Rescue, please take a look.
I was invited to Thornbeck College last Wednesday morning, I chose to take Mitzi, all the students were wonderful, a credit to their teaching staff, they loved Mitzi and she did me proud, she enjoyed walking around the common room, they also showed me their newly made hedgehog house, of course it was excellent, asked if more could be made so I can release there, I also met Snowdrop the giant albino hedgehog.
Finally I would like you all to meet our new addition to the rescue, Emily, a mere 300 grams, quite poorly on arrival, about eighty ticks had to be removed and antibiotics started, she is making slow but sure progress. Isn’t she adorable?! Her finder Ben and his mum brought her on Friday night from Durham, out of the area slightly but she is here which is what I wanted. She is too small to mingle with the other hedgehogs so she sits with Trev whilst I do cages and supper time. I run the rescue from inside our house, they aren’t any bother at all, very clean and they sleep on vet beds and, because I am small compared to other rescues, I am able to keep my standards of care very high. Being in the house makes it possible for me to check on them during the night if necessary.
Tip of the Week: If you see a hedgehog out during the day please ring The British Hedgehog Preservation Society on 01584 890801. They will have a list of rehabbers too.
