Many thanks firstly to Paul and the team of the Newton News for helping me spread the word about the plight of our beautiful hedgehogs via this weekly article. I sincerely hope that everyone enjoys and learns about them. Also, a big thank you to those of you who stopped to see me last Friday in Tesco, the purchases and donations were really appreciated, thanks to Roy, finder of Brenda, and also Audrey, who always donates and says hello. Of course, June and Valerie for the beautiful items which are hand made for our hoggies funds.
It’s time to get serious now, most hedgehogs will be in hibernation now, however, can I ask everyone, who support feeds our hedgehogs, to continue to do so, reason being they can periodically wake up to feed then go back to sleep, some don’t hibernate at all but I hope they are all asleep now because the temperatures are very hostile. I hope we have all the very small hedgehogs now, safe in rescues across the county, otherwise they may never wake up from hibernation because they are too small.
These mammals are on the red list for extinction and need as much help as we can give them I am over occupied in my rescue and I am having to raise funds because, to be honest, I have never had this many here at one time. My standards are high and I maintain the quality of care they need and deserve to each and every one, they share our home with us.
Also, we need to ensure that our gardens are safe and passable for our hedgehogs, to cut a CD size hole in the bottom of our fence is not only simple, but beneficial, to your garden and our hedgehogs, they eat all of the damaging bugs that inhabit your garden and sometimes the hedgehog becomes ill and can die by doing this but if they are lucky, they get admitted to rescues who, like myself, have the equipment, knowledge and support of a great vet to help them survive these awful burdens.
Also, to deliberately harm or captivate a wild hedgehog, if untrained and without a rehabilitator to advise and monitor, is also illegal, these are wild animals that can die of stress related illnesses. Do not hesitate to come and ask as many questions as you like on Saturday, myself and Sandra, of Darlington Rescue, are at the Christmas Fair this Saturday 10-2 at the PCP.
All hoggies in here are doing very nicely, I am happy to be able to give these wonderful mammals a safe haven
