The first thing I am about to say, and I know this is for the minority of people out there, is this ‘out in the day is not ok’, I need people to contact me as soon as you see a hedgehog out when they should be asleep, they are nocturnal. Slug pellets, pesticides and rat poisons are also hedgehog killers, not just the vermin that visits your garden. Our hedgehogs are endangered and protected under the wildlife act and, as a rehabber, I see plenty of injuries and problems that these poor souls face every time they venture out for something to eat, that’s all they want, nothing else.
Finally, responsible dog owners need to make sure that their gardens are free from visiting hedgehogs before their dogs go out, shine a torch or, better still, put your dog on a lead, the hedgehog is just passing through.
Thanks to everyone who has made donations to keep these babies fed, I always use the best food possible for growth and health which is Royal Canin. I have done some lovely releases, as I haven’t had time to count up for this month I think eight last week is accurate.
I admit hedgehogs every day practically, some are easier to treat than others but we have had a lot of babies this year, my incubator is getting some hammer, it’s occupied now with a 105g baby girl. The prices for the extension are hopefully imminent, what this will mean when it’s built is that the poorly hedgehogs will have all their medicines, food, bedding, incubator and microscope ready for use, also the peace and tranquillity, away from the family noises, all conducive to happy hedgehogs and a higher success rate.
I have set up a gofundme on Facebook if anyone wants to make a donation.
All hoggies in Rescue are making slow progress but are alright, very small and, as the dark nights close in, overwintering will soon be upon us rescuers.
Thank you.
