Pupils from Year 5 at Sugar Hill Primary School went back in time for a day when they visited Beamish open-air museum. The children represented the school well as they always do and got into the spirit of the day’s visit by dressing in clothes from the Victorian age. While at the museum the children took part in a ‘Victorian’ school lesson, and with their studies complete for the day they visited Beamish’s own drift coal mine where they were given a deeper awareness of where coal came from and how it was used, particularly on the railways, in years gone by. This tied in very well with the excellent work the children are currently doing on their Year-5 novel, The Railway Children.
