Dear Sir,
I am astonished that Gary Farley of Aycliffe FC finds it curious that gates have fallen and that this has led to “much head scratching” as to why.
Surely he has been on the football scene long enough to know that the answer is as old as the game itself – “fans” (from the word fanatic, of course) are far more interested in watching a winning team in a lower league than a losing team in a higher division.
Fans are only interested in their team winning – unlike true sportsmen and women who go to see the game for its own sake, hoping their team will win but more interested in a close contest and giving credit where it is due.
So there’s your choice, Gary, if you want the fans you’ve got to suffer a season or two of relegation and start winning again with the talent available in your present squad, or up their quality and start consistently winning at your present level – the quandary facing every club at some time or another, apart from those who can maintain a spot in the top half of the Premier League. No response necessary.
George Sutton
