Leo Haymer, a 13 year old student at Woodham Academy decided to raise money for Cancer Research UK by shaving his muchloved curly locks. He learned about cancer at school and his friend’s sister, Emily Cook, who was diagnosed at a very young age. As a gesture of support, he pledged to raise £50 for the charity which he exceeded quite early. The current amount raised is £752.01 (including gift aid), with more sponsors contributing daily. Proud friends and family have sponsored Leo, who plays in defence for Darlington 21st Allstars. A further generous contribution was made by the parents of his football team who have known him since he first kicked a ball.

It shocked Leo to learn that 1 in 2 people will be diagnosed with some form of cancer. However CRUK has developed ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer, boosting the survival rate. The money raised will be sent to CRUK to help fund their work. There are many fundraising ideas on the CRUK website which his parents envisage Leo will take on board for future challenges in his life.
