An exhibition of student artwork exploring the themes of nature, sustainability and harmony has been displayed at County Hall. Sugar Hill School pupils are among 12 schools across County Durham, Sunderland and Hartlepool showcasing their work as part of the ‘Exploring the Nature of Harmony’ exhibition in the Durham Room at County Hall. The project, which has been co-ordinated by Education Durham, is based on the concepts from a book written by HRH Prince Charles in 2010 and explores the connections between art, maths and science. For the first time in the North East of England, teachers from the participating schools were involved in four seasonallythemed teacher training days delivered by the Prince’s School of Traditional Arts (PSTA), who then delivered their resources back to their own classrooms.
Cllr Olwyn Gunn, Cabinet member for Children and Young People’s Services, who officially opened the exhibition said: “The art produced by the students has been of a very high standard and we were delighted to see this exhibition in County Hall. “Both the students and teachers involved enjoyed taking part in the project and developed a greater understanding and appreciation of the natural world in which we live.” Workshops around the artwork are also taking place with sessions including 3D construction and tessellation activities such as discovering Islamic patterns and the opportunity to create simple geometric tile designs. Rich Hurst, Education Development Advisor at Durham County Council, said: “This has been a fantastic project to bring to County Durham and the schools involved have produced some brilliantly creative artwork through the excellent leadership of tutors from the PSTA.”
