On the 11th November 2018, the 100th Anniversary of the ending of the First World War is to be commemorated.
The statues of Tommy, which have been erected at St. Clare’s Church and in Aycliffe Village, will be the focus of celebrations on Sunday 11th November 2018.
Woodham Academy is launching a project throughout our local schools in which it is hoped that every child will be given an opportunity to take part in a unique occasion.
As part of their historical research during the summer holidays, some Woodham Academy pupils have produced models.
Pupils are to be asked to write a letter to say a Thank You to Tommy.
The letters may be written on the basis of Tommy being a relative, friend, colleague, mate, or fellow soldier.
This is not a competition, but it is hoped that an anthology of letters may be produced. Each school will be asked to select a number of items to be included.
It is hoped that we may be allowed to participate in the celebrations, when representatives from each school will lay a bag containing their letters near to the statue.
If that is not possible, another suitable event will be arranged.
Where schools also wish to produce models, drawings and pictures, an attempt will be made to arrange somewhere for the items to be displayed.
As the aim is to provide an opportunity for as many people as possible to participate, adults who also wish to submit a letter or piece of artwork, are asked to contact John S. Denham – johnsdenham@sky.com
Remember, this is a once in a lifetime occasion in which everyone is invited to participate.
