On Wednesday 6th March a group of Year 7 and Year 8 students from Woodham Academy had the exciting opportunity to attend an intergenerational event, organised by County Durham Age UK, at Newton Aycliffe Youth Centre.
The event set out to bring together older and younger people from the community, challenging stereotypes and giving an opportunity to share experiences, skills and friendship.
The event was planned to allow skills to be shared betweeen the generations, allowing older people and younger people to learn from each other. Students participated in spoon playing, mosaic making, curling and keep fit, all alongside the specialist volunteers who, very kindly taught the students new skills.
World Champion spoon player, Bert Draycott was a big hit with the students who will now pick up a spoon and use it for a different purpose – to play a rendition of the ‘Roker Ripple’ taught to them by Bert!
