Students from Greenfield College worked hard last term to create artworks and poetry to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the start of World War 1.
They made artist’s boxes filled with ideas and memories and wrote poetry based on their research.
The work they created featured in an exhibition organised by Aycliffe Village Local History Society at the Village Hall recently inspired by information and artefacts shared by the Society.
Poems and images of their work are included in the book published to accompany the exhibition (funded by the National Lottery) “The Great War; Great Aycliffe, Brafferton and Coatham Mundeville Remember.”
The book is available from the Aycliffe History Society website www.aycliffehistory.org.uk – The exhibition has already reached over 400 people and reached more whilst on tour for a week from 29th September in an empty shop in Aycliffe Town Centre.
The students really enjoyed seeing their work in situ alongside other memorabilia and items remembering the First World War.
Resident Ken Fox said: “the work the young people created is wonderful. The poetry is very powerful and mature. The art work boxes are very emotive and the young people have really employed a lot of empathy.
Well done to Greenfield Arts for developing this work with the Aycliffe Local History Society, but well done to the students at Greenfield for the very impressive work which was a great addition to the exhibition and publication.”
