On Monday 12th January 2015, Helen Wilson from the National Citizen Service came in to work with Year 11 students at Woodham Academy to promote their summer scheme.
The scheme aims to give students the opportunity to experience the freedom of life away from home whilst ensuring that they undertake fundraising or voluntary work to help the local community.
It is an excellent way to make sure they develop key employability skills such as team work, organisation communication skills amongst many others. This follows its success in 2014 which saw six students from Woodham Academy participate in the scheme.
Nadia Thompson, Casey Davidson, Jack Jacob, Lukas Balmer-Howieson, Jessica Thompson and Amy Jo Saunders spent one week away from home followed by a week’s residential at The University of Durham.
“These are skills that cannot be taught in the classroom but are sought after amongst employers and this is therefore an ideal opportunity for students in Year 11 to enhance their CV’s whilst at the same time having fun” said Helen Wilson.
Sarah McGinnety, Associate Assistant Head teacher at Woodham Academy said “This is an invaluable experience for our young people and we look forward to seeing more students participate in this year’s scheme”.
