A new craze is sweeping through Woodham students and it has huge educational value. Students across the school have been participating in Code Combat activities. These involves playing an online role playing game (RPG) but instead of controlling your character the traditional gaming fashion with a game controller or keyboard, students have to write short programs. Mr Smith’s Woodham clan is composed of interested students and is now 19th in the world and still climbing the global league table! Mr Smith, Director of ICT, said “The take-up has been fantastic! Lots of students are logging in at home to complete further programming tutorials and up-skill”. Students also have an opportunity to fight against Mr Smith’s character by submitting more efficient code than his in the multiplayer arena.
A Year 11 GCSE Computing student stated “Code Combat is great! It benefits my Computing knowledge and it is a fun way of learning Python programming”
The Computing department has also seen a significant investment in new technology this week as old interactive whiteboards in two main computer suites have been replaced with state-of-the-art multi-touch screens on motorised adjustable stands. Mrs Lind said “These huge touch screens are fantastic! The screens are really bright and the text is extremely sharp. They are perfect for interactive demonstrations. Children really enjoy using them to demonstrate their work to the rest of the group.”
