Two students from Greenfield Community College travelled to London’s Clapton Girls Academy to compete in the final of the ‘Educate and Celebrate Great Rainbow Bake off 2017’. The students were among the ten teams of finalists in the nationwide competition proving that promoting equality is a piece of cake! The finalists were chosen from over 300 entries and baked to the theme of Power for Good and PHSE/Law to celebrate Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans History Month UK. Judging was actress Alicya Eyo from Bad Girls and Emmerdale, and Scott Nunn editor of Gay Star News, they were impressed with all the entries and loved the message the finalists were sending to all. Assistant Head Teacher Ms Davis expressed how proud she was to hear the students confidently talking to London Live about LGBT inclusion and being superb role models to the Primary Schools that were also involved. The competition was fierce and all cakes made were excellent.
Although the girls did not win they were in great spirits and had a thoroughly fantastic experience. They were interviewed by a number of journalists and spoke passionately about equality. Educate & Celebrate is an Ofsted and DFE recognised Best Practice Programme that gives staff, students, parents and governors the confidence and strategies to implement an LGBT + Inclusive curriculum to successfully eradicate homophobia, biphobia and transphobia from our schools and communities. Greenfield Community College have been part of the best practice programme which invites teachers, students, parents and governors to partake in whole school change through training, policy, curriculum, community and environment giving opportunities to reflect upon their experiences. They currently hold Silver Award as a best practise school.
