Stray Aid in Coxhoe have been conducting an unusual event raising money to purchase their site, expand and improve their current kennels. The long time goal is to raise £250,000 to make sure stray aid are here for the long run. Stray Aid take in many of the warden’s stray dogs from County Durham and surrounding areas including Middlesbrough. They take responsibility for the dogs once their 7 days are up and do all they can to never put a re-homeable dog to sleep. Without charities such as this the 12,000+ dogs stray aid see a year would be put down.
The event was called “Stray Aid’s 12 Dogs of Christmas” with one volunteer (Hannah Critchlaw) starting on Christmas Day staying overnight with her Stray Aid. Then one more volunteer and their adopted dog were added each night for 12 nights. Newtonian Diana Watson and her dog Meg, adopted from Stray Aid 5 years ago, started on night 8 and spent 5 nights in the kennels. ‘It was very cold and tempting to drop out after the first night . But I’m glad we carried on and finished our 5 nights. It was cold and fairly noisy but was also a lot of fun’. said Diana.
