Here at St Francis CE Junior School, we are a group of students who call ourselves ‘Eco-Warriors’. This means that we are trying to work together to make a difference in our school, our community and our world. Currently we recycle and reuse as much as possible, from recycling worksheets we no longer use, we limit what we laminate, we worked together to make an eco-friendly Christmas dinner and Christmas decorations, but we want to make a substantial impact, so we would like your assistance.
As a school, we are planning to hold a fundraiser, which we aim to promote the cause and impact of climate change through deforestation. Deforestation is caused by human activity and results in trees being chopped down, which cause habitats to be destroyed, animals to become at risk of extinction and increase the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere contributing to global warming.
Through our research on the rainforest foundation website, we have discovered that every two seconds, there are two acres of rainforest that has been destroyed, this is equivalent to one football pitch. Greenhouse gases are layers of carbon dioxide surrounding our Earth, so that the planet is able to sustain life. The issue arises when more carbon dioxide is emitted in the atmosphere and causes the planet to warm up. Greenhouse gases are emitted by: burning fossil fuels for energy, animals and living things, plastic pollution, using fossil fuels for vehicles and transportation.
As a school, to fundraise, we will be running laps of the school yard in April/May, with each lap being completed within a minute, which is representing the equivalent of thirty football pitches being destroyed. We are aiming to complete this challenge within the month. We are hoping that you will be willing to sponsor us, as a way of fulfilling your environmental commitment to the world. With the money we raise, we will be donating this to two charities. One charity, where, as a school, we can sponsor an Orangutan as they are one of the most at risk and endangered animals affected by deforestation through the WWF. The other charity will be a company, who will plant new trees to make up for those that are being destroyed.
We look forward to hearing from you.
