The Big Club plays host to another great Sportsman’s Evening on Friday 2nd November to raise funds for charities: “Leukaemia and Lymphoma” and “Just Say Yes”. Speakers are former Rangers and Scotland International goalkeeper Andy Goram and his good friend and former BDO World Darts Champion Andy “the Viking” Fordham. The evening is hosted by Steve Walls. Goram is best known for his time at Rangers, where he accumulated 5 league titles in 286 appearances. He was also capped 43 times for his country.
In the twighlight of his career he received a surprise phone call to go and sign on loan for Manchester United. He swore the phone call was a wind up from his long time friend Ally McCoist and almost cost himself the move before realising that he really was speaking to Sir Alex.
He was labelled by Sir Alex Ferguson as “Scotland’s best ever goal keeper ” who then added he was “glad he had him for three months and not seven years as he’d have been the end of me!”
Fordham, best known for his weight and nickname of “the Viking” which was bestowed on him by Bobby George due to his height and long hair, reached his career peak in 2004 where he became Champion beating Mervin King 6-3 after defeating pre tournament favourite Raymond Van Barneveld in the semi final.
He freely admits that due to his nerve settling excessive drinking, prior to matches, he cannot even remember the most important game in his career.
Not only will you get to hear great stories and watch the Viking in action, you will get to the opportunity to bid of many pieces of signed sporting memorabilia in our auction. We have signed items from England 2012 squad, Newcastle, Sunderland and Manchester United.
Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research is the only UK charity solely dedicated to research into blood cancers, including leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma. The Newton Aycliffe fund raising arm is known as the Banana Army, they have been busy organising and raising funds through various events throughout the North East and recently took part in the Great North Run.
“Just Say Yes” is a fundraising initiative which started in Newton Aycliffe after the tragic death of a local teenager Mark Bulman from cancer in 2010. His inspirational fight and thirst for life in the aftermath of his diagnosis led him to try and experience everything he had wanted to. “Just Say Yes” was born as a result of this and raises funds which are donated to the two Newcastle Hospitals which treated him so well.
We are hoping to raise a good sum of money for each of these charities so why not join us, enjoy the night and even have the chance to throw some darts against the Viking!
Tickets cost just £20 each, to enquire and book tickets please contact Michael Rippon on 0789 1507278.
