Woodham Academy strives to offer its students a wide range of careers information and opportunities. Recently, Year 11 took part in a Specialist Day, tailored to exploring many of the post 16 options on offer in the local area. Students experienced an excellent speed networking activity, organised and delivered through the Durham Works Programme. They were able to take part in discussions with local businesses, education providers and Durham County Council. The aim of the day was to give the students an insight into the different career paths available when they leave school. It was evident to see throughout the day, and feedback from students, that they were able to demonstrate their excellent communication skills, as well as conducting themselves in a professional and courteous manner.
Another session allowed students to gain an insight into college life, by exploring the courses on offer at New College Durham, Durham Sixth Form and Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form. All students attended a virtual conference with Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form, where they were able to gain an understanding of the courses on offer and the application criteria. Their Careers lead was very impressed by the level of questions and confidence from the students in particular when they were given time and support to experience further education applications.
Woodham Academy is building its careers programme in to one which supports all of their students in their further education choices, by providing the widest range of experiences and information possible. They continue to look for alternative and innovative ways to prepare the students for life after school in a continually changing environment.
