On Friday 3rd February, Woodham Academy welcomed Professor Simon James from Durham University to host our first Speakers into Schools event. Speakers for Schools is an independent education charity that provides young people in UK state schools and colleges with access to talks from leading, influential figures, free of charge. By sharing top-level experience, inspiration and insights, our purpose is to level the playing field of opportunities for stimulation and encouragement by those who shape the world of today.
Professor James spoke to a group of high achieving Y10 students about the development of literature with a particular focus on the key text of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Students were engaged and stimulated by his analysis of the text drawing contextual references about Victorian England. Students were also given the opportunity to ask questions about studying at Durham University and about careers using English Literature. Students were eager to hear from such a professional speaker and from someone very influential in his field. Woodham Academy are looking forward to hosting future events in participation with Speakers for Schools.
