Newton Aycliffe Spartans stay at the top of the British Baseball Federation Northern AA Division with a 9-1 record thanks to two convincing victories at bottom side Harrogate Cubs last weekend.
In game 1, Harrogate kept the Spartans offensive quiet and held a 3-1 lead going into the 6th inning.  But the Spartans exploded into life, scoring 7 runs in the 6th.  Bryan Dunkel pitched well and claimed his 4th win of the season.
In game 2, Spartans showed no mercy as the home side gave several inexperienced players time on the field.  Spartans scored 17 unanswered runs with Lee Hill, Jason Hill and Bryan Dunkel the main contributors to the run total. Spartans Player Coach Mike Holton pitched a complete game shut.
With the playoff schedule having been announced,  Spartans know a top 4 finish will secure a place in those playoffs as Mike Holton explained ‘We are aware of what we have to do to ensure a successful season.  The top four sides qualify for the playoffs and a top two finish will secure home field advantage for the semi finals and that is certainly our goal from this point forward’
The winners of the two semi finals will progress to the National Baseball Finals Weekend which will be held in September at the National Baseball Centre at Farnham Park,  Buckinghamshire/
Spartans are next in action on Sunday 29th June when they travel to Merseyside to face 5th placed Liverpool Trojans.
