Local schoolchildren recently had the opportunity to make their town a better, cleaner place to live thanks to ‘Town Pride Environment Week’ organised by Aycliffe Youth Council and Great Aycliffe Town Council.
During this campaign every primary school within the town had the opportunity to take part in a presentation about litter, which explored the potential consequences to the environment and nature from littering. This was then followed up with a class litter pick when the children were offered the chance to help clear up their local environment.
Great Aycliffe Town Council’s Environment Officer said “Despite the indifferent weather Town Pride Environment week was a roaring success. We hope that the children learned some new facts from the presentations and this will equip them well to educate their friends and families about the perils of littering”.
He continued “We followed up the presentations with the litter picks to reinforce the key anti littering messages; as we were walking around the children were able to answer questions about decomposition rates and what could be potentially damaged by the litter which they found”.
It was noted by most schools that there was far less litter compared to previous years. It is hoped that this positive trend is continued in future years and can therefore be attributed to the positive actions of the children and the Town Pride Environment Week.
