After witnessing the extensive media coverage of Typhoon Haiyan which hit the Philippines recently, St John’s School has just completed a ‘Disaster Response Week’ to support the call for international aid by the Disaster Emergency Committee.
For one week, the whole school has focused upon raising awareness and fundraising for those in need, wearing white ribbons and leading a wide range of events and activities such as Guess the Teacher competitions, cake bakes and penalty shoot-outs.
One pastoral class in particular, 8Y (pictured) managed to raise a staggering £550 from their sponsored spellathon and cake sale. It is hoped that the efforts will support those in the Philippines who are most in need of emergency supplies, and the final total is due to be announced next week (in excess of £2500.).
Miss Jo Hopper, St John’s Citizenship Coordinator said, “We are overwhelmed by the tremendous efforts of our students across all year groups who have really shown compassion and generosity by contributing so willingly to such a worthy cause.”
These fundraising activities follow the Children in Need appeal where once again the school dug deep into their pockets to help those less fortunate than themselves.
Special mention must go to 10N who, between 27 students, managed to raise £615.00.
