Town Councillor Paul Symons has ambitions to take over the Locomotion Inn at Heighington Station to save this historical building from vandals and what could be its eventual demolition.

Paul estimates to buy and restore the property would cost over £350,000 and has started a hopeful fundraising appeal.

When he approached Newton News a few weeks ago for advice we put him in touch with Patricia Pemberton, Chairman of Friends of Stockton & Darlington Railway.

Since then there have been moves to secure the property by County Councillor John Clare who has contacted the council. Patricia, recognising the historical significance of the former Railway Ticket Office, is making other enquiries to save the building.

Cllr. Clare said it is essential this building is preserved. The premises are in a very bad state and coincidentally he has been appointed by DCC to sit on a committee made up from local councils to ensure the Anniversary is a tourist success. He is hoping the Locomotion Inn could play a part in the celebrations, working alongside Friends of Stockton & Darlington Railway.

The Friends were formed in 2013 to bring together all those with an interest in the S&DR to ensure that by the bicentenary in 2025, the 1825 Stockton and Darlington Railway line will have received the recognition and the protection it deserves as the birthplace of the modern railway.

The first Railway Engine was placed on the Heighington Station railway line in 1825 and the Aycliffe History Society recently mounted a plaque to mark that event.
