Newcastle-based women’s roller derby league, Newcastle Roller Girls, has announced it will be hosting a five-game tournament at Benfield Sports Centre in Walkergate on Saturday 9th November.
The tournament, Hassle in Newcastle, is sponsored by 5th Blocker Skates and has been revived as part of the league’s 10 year anniversary celebrations – six years after the inaugural event that saw the Newcastle Roller Girls go up against the likes of Furness Firecrackers, Durham City Rolling Angels and Middlesbrough Rising Rollers.
Roller derby is a full contact sport played on roller skates. Teams compete to score points by one skater on each team, called the jammer, passing the opposing team’s players, known as blockers.
This year’s event will see the home team taking on visitors including Berlin-based Bear City Wallbreakers, Edinburgh natives Auld Reekie Roller Derby, and Birmingham locals Rainy City Rollers and Central City Roller Derby in a jam-packed day of fun and competition.
Alex Henry aka Chew-Whacker, captain of the Whippin’ Hinnies at Newcastle Roller Girls, said: “We are thrilled to be hosting a wealth of talented leagues at the next Hassle in Newcastle tournament in November.
“The competition gives our B team, the Whippin’ Hinnies, the chance to go up against fantastic teams from around the country, and fans the chance to see five action-packed games of roller derby showcasing some fantastic skating talent and join us at our after party to celebrate 10 years of Newcastle Roller Girls in style.”
Bear City Roller Derby, said: “Meeting and playing other teams is always a source of inspiration and allows us to grow as a team and as a community. Bear City’s A team attended Euroclash in 2017 (BCRD 177 vs. ARRD 176 nailbiter, and BCRD 228 vs. NRG 94). This time around looks like it will be a rematch of the B teams!
“We are more than looking forward to meeting both Auld Reekie Roller Derby and Newcastle Roller Girls again! See you there on track!”
Tickets for the event are £10 in advance. To find out more about Hassle in Newcastle or to buy tickets visit https://bit.ly/2ZmceK5 or the Newcastle Roller Girls Facebook page.
