Roller Derby, one of the fastest growing sports in the world, has a massive following in the North East, where teams in both the Men’s and Women’s leagues are ranked amongst the best in Europe.  Saturday July 1st sees newcomers Durham City Rolling Angels host their first game in the British championships and welcome teams from Grimsby, York and Mansfield to Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre. But what is Roller Derby I hear you ask? Roller Derby is a full contact sport that pits two teams against each other. The game is fast and furious and full of adrenaline – once you see it you’ll be hooked. Durham City Rolling Angels are a female run team with over 30 skaters on their squad.  “We are a group of fierce, strong women, who are more like a family than just teammates.  We train three times a week, around our work and family commitments.  We will also be recruiting new skaters this summer to be a part of our league” explains Claire Turner aka ‘Clairely Psycho,’ part of the training team for Durham City Rolling Angels.
She explained the journey it has taken to be ready to compete. “We have trained so unbelievably hard now for nearly 2 years to be ready for our first year in the British Championships. This first season has brought many challenges, but no matter what we will always give 110% in every game we play.” In their last British Championship game DCRA narrowly missed out on a victory, and being so close to their first win has made them even more determined than ever.   Tickets for their home game are available from just £5 per adult and children aged 12 and under are free of charge. Contact the Angels through their Facebook page or Website to reserve your tickets and support your local roller derby team.
