On Saturday 9th November, Phill and Andy from Around Town, Aycliffe Radio, joined some of the parents and coaches from Athena Sports Academy, based at Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre to welcome the parents and gymnasts who had successfully completed their fundraising 12 mile sponsored walk, starting at Howden le Wear and travelling via Bishop Auckland arriving back at Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre around 2pm to celebrate their achievement and hopefully making lots of money along the way.
The senior display team Akrovasia, which recently competed in Blackpool at a UK-wide event coming third for Best Overall Display, earning the right to represent Athena and Great Britain at an international festival in Italy – ‘The Festival Del Sole’ in July 2025. The money raised will go towards the £30,000 target to get all 27 gymnasts and their coaches there to perform, compete and take part in workshops to learn new skills. It’s a fantastic opportunity for a local sports club from the town to perform at an international event and put our town on the map!
If anyone would like to sponsor these incredible gymnasts, please visit the Go Fund Me page: https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-get-our-gymnasts-to-festival-de-sole-in-italy
They are also hoping that some local businesses will kindly join the ones that have already supported them, to help them reach their target. Every donation will be greatly appreciated.
