A challenging four day bike ride has been completed by 50 people to celebrate the 70th anniversary of World War Two.
‘The Ride of Remembrance’, organised by the Foundation of Light in partnership with veteran support charity Forward Assist, started in Brussels on 1 July and travelled across Belgium and France to end in Paris. Riders cycled an impressive 320 miles and climbed over 15,700ft in just 96 hours.
The commemorative challenge passed through towns that played a significant part in WW2 including Huy, La Roche en Ardenne, Durbuy, Sedan, Novian-Porcien and Soissons, ending at the Eiffel Tower, Paris.
Head of finance and business partnering at livin, Peter Camp, was one of the riders and has raised nearly £2,400 for the Foundation of Light, one of livin’s long-standing partners.
The partnership has worked together for a number of years to deliver award winning health, education and employment programmes for people living in Durham.
Peter said: “It was an amazing experience for a worthwhile cause. I really appreciate all the support I have received with special thanks to livin, RBS, Zurich Municipal and Orchard.”
“I am incredibly proud of raising such a significant amount of money for the Foundation of Light. There were riders of all ages and abilities taking part, but knowing we were raising money for such a good cause really spurred us on! It was a real achievement for us all.”
Proceeds raised by the riders will be invested in projects improving the lives of children and families in the North East.
Structurally and financially independent of Sunderland AFC, Foundation of Light rely on fundraising for 90% of project costs.
